LIFE magazine photographer Larry Burrows captured this scene of four Marines carrying a dead comrade during a firefight in October 1966 near Hill 484, close to the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Vietnam. To the right is freelance photojournalist Catherine Leroy of France. The editors at LIFE cropped her out of the photo.

Burrows and three other journalists — Henri Huet of The Associated Press, Kent Potter of United Press International and Keizaburo Shimamoto of Newsweek — were killed on Feb. 10, 1971, while riding in Huey shot down over Laos.
