When the Japanese Betty bomber was used as a torpedo plane, did it carry the torpedo internally or externally?

—AB

? ? ?

Dear AB,

Any photograph of a Mitsubishi G4M in action (such as that of G4M1s attacking the U.S. fleet off Guadalcanal on August 8, 1942) shows that its torpedo was stowed internally in its capacious bomb bay, which had a large aperture that usually dispensed with doors in the case of the G4M1 and the G4M2e, which carried the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka manned rocket bomb mostly externally.

Sincerely,
