It was sung to the tune ?John Brown?s Body.? Among the many people inspired by Howe?s words was Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said: ?I honor the author of ?The Battle Hymn??. She was born in the city of New York. I could well wish she were a native of Massachusetts. We have no such poetess in New England.?
