Based on chapter 63 of the Old Testament?s Book of Isaiah, Julia Ward Howe wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic,? which deepened public enthusiasm for the war as an instrument of national salvation to purge the nation of the evils of slavery. It was sung to the tune ?John Brown?s Body.? Among the many people inspired by Howe?s words was Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said: ?I honor the author of ?The Battle Hymn??.
