The fate of brothers Sgt. James Bishop White, right, and his brother, Lieutenant Jasper White, both of the 60th Tennessee Infantry, is emblematic of the Army of Tennessee’s troubles. James White was taken prisoner at Big Black River, Miss.;, May 17, 1863., and spent most of the rest of the war at Point Lookout, Md. Jasper White was also captured and wrote of being held at “Lake Erie Prison” where he “nearly starved.” (Heritage Auctions)
