French royalty Prince Philippe, Count of Paris and his brother, Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres, liked adventure. The siblings left Europe in April 1861 to support the Union.
Both were appointed captains and assistant adjutant generals on the staff of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan. They both resigned after an unsuccessful Peninsula Campaign on July 15, 1862.
