Colonel Ernst von Vegesack led the 20th New York at Antietam. He was born in Sweden and served as a Swedish army officer before coming to America. He received a Medal of Honor for directing troops under heavy fire at Gaines’ Mill as a volunteer on Brig. Gen. Dan Butterfield’s staff.
