Helen Taft. In 1910 a donated shipment of 2,000 trees was destroyed before planting because of insect infestation and disease. Tokyo mayor Yukio Ozaki donated 3,020 more trees in 1912. The first two trees were planted in Potomac Park on March 27, 1912 by Helen Taft and Viscountess Iwa Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador to the United States.
