For a brief period in World War I, soldiers from this Native American tribe acted as code talkers on the Western Front.

Choctaw. Although Navajo would later be used in World War II, several soldiers in the 36th Division realized the value of Choctaw in relaying military orders. Men who were trained by the Army in Choctaw code were designated Class 1 code talkers. Choctaw history points to eight original members of Company E, all of Choctaw heritage, who went on to train others.
