Contempt of Congress. The ten men were well-known screenwriters and directors who refused to cooperate when called before the House of Representatives Un-American Activities Committee in October 1947. The committee demanded each man admit to being a communist and name other communists in the entertainment industry. When they refused, each was sentenced to a year in prison and fined $1,000. The industry blacklisted them until the 1960’s.
