After a thirty year battle in Congress between Ohio and Michigan, the “Toledo Strip” was awarded to Ohio and Michigan received this parcel of land.
Upper Peninsula. Officials in Michigan at first were not happy with this decision which allowed Michigan to be admitted as the 26th state in 1837. However, residents soon discovered the Upper Peninsula to be rich in timber and iron ore.
