Chief Osceola fought U.S. government forces in 1835 to hold onto this land for his nation.

Florida. Osceola led the Seminoles, a Southern branch of the Creeks, during the second of their three wars against the U.S. government. He was captured when he was invited by General T.S. Jesup to negotiate a truce in 1837. The Seminoles’ three wars were from 1816-1842 by which time they were almost wiped out. They never negotiated a formal peace until 1934.
