The Third Awakening of 1857-1858. Beginning on September 23, 1857, Lanphier, a lay person rather than a member of the clergy, began opening an old, empty church on Fulton Street in New York City for noontime prayer. The prayer meeting grew to 10,000 attendees within six months and revival swept the nation.
