John Kennedy on June 12, 1944, the same day he received the Navy’s and Marine’s medals for “courage, endurance, and excellent leadership [that] contributed to the saving of several lives.” The awards were for his actions on the night of August 2, 1943 and for the several days that followed. On that night, a Japanese destroyer attacked his PT boat which caught fire.
