First built in the early 1800’s, chickees were platform houses used by this group of Native Americans.

Seminoles. Many Native American tribes lived in communal homes. However, Seminole families lived in private homes called chickees which were built three feet off the ground. The roofs were thatched and slanted and canvas curtains were used as walls, as needed.
