Three. The first march on March 7 became known as Bloody Sunday. Approximately 600 people started out and were beaten and gassed by state and county police. Two days later, the marchers tried again but had to turn around. Two weeks later, on March 21, the marchers tried a third time under the protection of the Alabama National Guard and completed their march when they arrived at the state capitol in Montgomery on March 25.
