Artist George Catlin who lived from 1796-1872 devoted his life’s work of painting and writing to depicting the culture of this community of people.
Native Americans. Catlin’s work helped change European-Americans’ attitudes from regarding Native Americans as savages to regarding them as people. His paintings have been displayed in the Smithsonian Institution and in the National Gallery of Art. He lived for a time in the Smithsonian Castle.
