First woman publisher of a daily newspaper in the Deep South, Eliza Holbrook Nicholson published this newspaper.
Times-Picayune of New Orleans. As Eliza Poitevent, she became literary editor of the Picayune. The paper’s editor and owner, Alva Holbrook was 41 years older than she was but she married him in 1872. Upon his death, she inherited the paper which was $80,000 in debt. She transformed it into a thriving enterprise. In 1878, she married George Nicholson who was thirty years her senior.
