Fanny Crosby. Crosby had been a student then later a teacher at the New York Institute for the Blind. Congress would not fund this school or similar schools due to the prevailing belief in America that persons who were blind could not be educated. Crosby’s performance of her original poetry greatly helped in the destruction of this myth and funding was provided.
