The civil rights movement. Martin, a young white photographer for The Birmingham News in Alabama, recorded images of police and state troopers beating and using tear gas against demonstrators trying to cross the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Alabamaa. The March 7, 1965, event became known as Bloody Sunday. Martin covered other Selma-to-Montgomery marches and the day-to-day events of the movement. He was beaten and received death threats but his photographs were published worldwide.
