George Washington’s nephew, Bushrod Washington, was appointed in 1798 by President John Adams. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, he served in the Continental Army, studied law, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He inherited Mount Vernon when George and Martha Washington died.
