Herbert Hoover. Orphaned by age eight, Hoover moved from Iowa to Newberg, Oregon when he was eleven to live with his uncle, Dr. Henry John Minthorn. Hoover stayed in Oregon until he entered Stanford University as one of her first students. Hoover, his brother, Theodore (Tad), and his sister, Mary, were all raised by different relatives.
