Robert E. Lee. Gray was the personal maid of Lee’s wife, Mary. Mary Lee was the great granddaughter of Martha Washington. By the beginning of the Civil War, the Lees had lived in Arlington House in Virginia for thirty years. They left when the war began and made the home Gray’s responsibility. Union troops invaded the home on May 24, 1861. Gary negotiated with them to preserve the Washington artifacts stored there.
