This was the first ship sank by a submarine in combat.
USS Housatonic. Sank by the CSS Huntley in Charleston Harbor on 17 February 1864. Housatonic lost only five men killed during the attack thanks to the shallow depth of the harbor. CSS Huntley was lost with all hands during the attack.
