The interception of the Zimmermann telegram helped propel the United States into this war.
World War I. The war had been going on for two years without U.S. troops on January 19, 1917 when German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann sent the telegram to the German minister in Mexico, Heinrich von Eckhardt. Britain intercepted the telegram which suggested Mexico form an alliance with Germany against the United States. On February 24, the telegram was released to the American public and on April 6, the United States entered the war.
