For forty years, Sr. Martin Couney had a display of incubators with live premature babies in them at this unusual location.
Coney Island. The exhibit only occurred in the summer. The babies could be seen at Coney Island and other amusement parks for a quarter. Since the medical community would not use incubators, Dr. Couney used this public exhibit to show the effectiveness of the incubators. Of the 8,000 very small babies displayed from 1903-1943, 6,500 lived.
