Florence Nightingale. Smithurst and Nightingale were first cousins and because of parental disapproval, Nightingale would not agree to the marriage. Neither ever married. Smithurst became a missionary and a parish rector. Nightingale founded the modern nursing profession and served nobly at the Scutari Hospital during the Crimean War.
