Istanbul, Turkey. Greek colonists led by King Byzas settled in the area in the seventh century B.C. The king named the city Byzantium after himself. The city later became part of the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine renamed it Constantinople. It became Istanbul in 1453 after it was conquered by the Ottomans.
