Grace Darling of England was awarded fifty pounds of silver by Queen Victoria as a reward for this achievement.
Rescuing shipwrecked passengers. Darling’s father was the principal keeper of the Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Islands. On September 7, 1838, he and Grace rowed a fishing boat through a storm to rescue nine survivors of the SS Forfarshire. Grace died at age 26 of tuberculosis.
