Provident Hospital and Training School of Nurses was the first American hospital to feature this.
Integrated staff. The hospital was founded in 1891 in Chicago by Daniel Hale Williams (known as Dr. Dan) since African-American doctors were barred from hospital staff positions. One of the first physicians to perform pericardium surgery, he later served as chief surgeon at the Freedman’s Hospital in Washington D.D. treating former slaves.
