William Rufus King, vice-president during this administration was the only vice-president sworn in outside of the United States.
Franklin Pierce. King, who had been a senator from Alabama, took the oath of office in Cuba. He was visiting Cuba in hopes of improving his health. He returned to the United States on April 17, 1853 and died the next day. He had been vice-president for six weeks.
