The book Charlotte Temple by Susanna Haswell Rowson is often given this distinction.
First bestselling novel in North America (published 1791), though Michael Wiggleworth’s epic apocalyptic poem, “Day of Doom” (1662), is considered the first bestseller written in the American colonies. Rowson was a novelist, actress, playwright, songwriter, and musician, using her talents at the Federal Street Theatre in Boston. She later opened a Young Ladies Academy there. Because her father was loyal to the British crown, Susanna and her family were imprisoned during the American Revolution.
