Four women – Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, Terese of Lisieux, and this lady – have been named Doctors of the Roman Catholic Church.
Hildegard of Bingen, who became abbess of the Rupertsberg Benedictine convent in Germany, was the tenth child in her family. Her parents gave her to the convent as a tithe. Doctor of the Church is given to those whose writings are considered useful in teaching church doctrine.
