Earn a PhD from an American university. She received her doctorate in 1877 at Boston University; her dissertation was “Greek Drama.” The first Ph.D.s in America had only been conferred in 1861, to three men at Yale Sheffield Scientific School. She went onto to organize and direct various schools.
