In 1925, the Tennessee state legislature passed the Butler Act, which did this.
Prohibited the teaching of evolution in any state school. The law was challenged by the ACLU, with Clarence Darrow for the defense at the famed Scopes Monkey Trial. Scopes’ conviction was overturned on a technically, although the law was found constitutional. The law was finally repealed in 1967.
