Judas Maccabeus was leader of the Jews living in Judea during the first century CE (formerly BC) who were working to free themselves of the rule of Antiochus IV, who was forcing them to abandon their faith and culture. War ensued with the Jewish troops victorious. When they reclaimed their temple, they found a small amount of oil to light their lamps and according to Hebrew tradition it miraculously lasted for eight days.
