Heliogland. On May 9, 1864, during the Second Schleswig War, Denmark won a tactical victory over the allied fleets of Austria and Prussia. However, Denmark lost the war, which ended with an armistice three days later. The wooden ships in the battle included coal-powered, screw-driven vessels; the last great battle of the Age of Sail was Navarino Bay on Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula, Oct. 20, 1827.
