Breech-loading rifle. The British marksman’s Ferguson Rifle is sometimes called the first breechloader, but it was actually an improvement on existing concepts. Ironically, Ferguson was killed at the 1781 battle of King’s Mountain, shot off his horse by several South Carolinans armed with American long rifles.
