Gunsmoke. John Wayne suggested little-known actor James Arness for the role of Marshal Matt Dillon when the program made the transition from radio to television in 1955; it ran until 1975. A false legend grew up that Wayne was offered and rejected the role. He did introduce the first TV episode, but like most film actors of the day, the Duke had no respect for television.
