Slavery. Brom, a male slave, and Mum Bett, a female slave, both owned by Colonel John Ashley, sued for their freedom under the Massachusetts Constitution. Brom and Bett won the jury trial. They were awarded their freedom, and Ashley was ordered to pay them thirty shillings and court costs. Mum Bett later took the name Elizabeth Freeman.
