Sherlock Holmes. Described as a “consulting detective,” Holmes was the creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A Study in Scarlet was published in 1887; Conan Doyle eventually wrote three more novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and his friend and assistant, Dr. John Watson.
