Elizabeth Pinckney, who successfully cultivated indigo plants in South Carolina, was the mother of Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and Thomas Pinckney. Charles served in the Continental Congress, as Minister to France, and ran for president twice. Thomas negotiated the Pinckney Treaty with Spain and served as South Carolina’s governor and in the House of Representatives.
