Barbed wire. In 1874, Glidden, of DeKalb, Illinois, pattented round fence wire with barbs curled around it. His invention allowed small farmers to fence themselves in on government land in the West, ending the open range. Michael Kelly had patented in 1868 a flat wire with barbs inserted through holes, but it was wasn’t nearly as effective as Glidden’s design.
