Joseph Wheeler. "Fighting Joe" Wheeler commanded the Army of Tennessee’s cavalry from 1862 to 1864. When the Spanish-American War broke out, Wheeler volunteered for service and received an appointment as a major general of volunteers. He commanded a dismounted cavalry division in Cuba. In 1900, he was commissioned a brigadier general in the regular army.
