The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, then the Russian administrative capital, was seized by Leon Trotsky’s communist Red Guards on Nov. 7, 1917. The guards had taken over other government buildings, banks and the railway station, but when the cruiser Aurora fired a shell at 9:40 p.m., that was the signal to seize the Winter Palace.
