USS Hornet (CV-8). Launched on December 14, 1940, Hornet was a Yorktown-Class carrier. After the Doolittle Raid, it fought in the Solomon Islands campaign and was heavily damaged during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and had to be abandoned. The Japanese later sunk the ship.
