Horse stealing. The Sundance Kid (Harry Longabaugh) was convicted in 1887 for stealing a horse near Sundance, Wyoming. Butch Cassidy (Robert Parker) was convicted in 1894 for buying a stolen horse in Wyoming. He was released after 18 months, in part because the judge had not informed the jury that buying a stolen horse was a crime only if the purchaser knew the animal had been stolen.
