Although America had drafted men into military service during the Civil War and World War I, the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 established the first conscription of men into the military during peacetime. At first, men between 21 and 35 were required to register for the draft, but after America entered World War II registration was expanded to include all men 18 to 45.
