Derne. As part of America’s first overseas war, against the Barbary Pirates, a force of eight US Marines and some 500 Arab and Greek mercenaries marched overland from Alexandria, Egypt, and successfully attacked the city of Derne (Derna) in what is now Libya. This victory is memorialized in the Marine Hymn with the line, "To the Shores of Tripoli."
