Masada. During the Great Jewish Revolt (66 to 74 AD) a group of Sicarii, or knife men, seized the remote fortress from a small Roman garrison. In 72 AD, the 10th Legion (Legio X Fretensis) finally captured the fort after a siege of about a year. The historian Josephus reports that the Sicarii killed their families and themselves rather than be captured.
